Beyond Words create word-free picture stories designed for people who find pictures easier than written words. Their book series is co-created with the people who benefit from them, including disabled people, refugees and children. The charity has commissioned Christmas cards with characters enjoying seasonal activities to celebrate the festive holidays and spread the word about visual literacy.
Visual literacy is the ability to make meaning from information presented as an image or series of pictures. It is an alternative to using written or printed text. Visual clues build-up a scene or story. Images are intended to be inclusive in presenting a diverse profile of people.
In a heritage context this approach can apply to pre-visit information or onsite understanding about the history of people, place and artefacts or collections. For some of us history becomes more accessible through pictures and objects. Do get in touch if you are interested in presenting current situations or past history as illustrative picture stories.
